Instructions for Creating FirstClass Web Pages

Using HomePage Construction Kit (HCK)
AFTER you have updated the FirstClass HomePage Construction Kit
(see Step One)


First you need to plan your web site BEFORE you begin creating your web site.  You need to know (or have an idea) how many web pages & their names BEFORE you begin.  After you have your plan, log into FirstClass, open your Home Page folder.  

If you do not see a Web Publishing folder on your FirstClass desktop, go to FILE > OPEN > Web Publishing Folder.  Then use the following steps to get started on your web page.

1.  Go to FILE > NEW > NEW DOCUMENT SPECIAL > HCK-3 WEB PAGE
        
2.  Maximize the screen by clicking in the middle box in the upper right-hand corner of the screen (between the "-" and "x" boxes).

3.  PAGE LINK NAME – type “Home Page” - this must be TWO WORDS - for your first/main page

- Globals Elements tab
Use the pull-down menu to select one of 13 colour scheme for your web site
- you cannot preview the colour schemes until you view your web page on the Internet
- the link for your web page will be http://www.ldisd.net/~firstname_lastname (example - mine would be http://www.ldisd.net/~Karen_Selwood)

Colour Scheme Preview Examples - click on the name to see what each colour scheme looks like:
Default, Crimson, RSB Blue, Ivy League Green, Wheat,  Pearson Blue, LiveLink, Night Shade, Evening Spice,  Lavendar, Christmas, Plum Purple, FirstClass, and you can customize yoru colour scheme (that's a different lesson).

Use the pull-down menu to select one of 3 Site Styles for your web site
- you cannot preview the site style until you view your web page on the Internet
- the link for your web page will be http://www.ldisd.net/~firstname_lastname (example - mine would be http://www.ldisd.net/~Karen_Selwood)

Site Style Preview Examples - click on the name to see what each colour scheme looks like:

- Header sub-tab – this tab defines all the information for the Header Information for your web site
- you have 3 lines for the title of your web page (you don't have to use all three)
- you have a space for an email name
(if your name is in the Header title - you shoucl type "Click here to contact me." in the Email Name textbox)

- Banner/Graphic Info - once you have found a graphic (clipart [animated or still] or picture) you'll need to upload it to your Home Page folder on the FirstClass desktop (while in the Home Pgae folder - go to FILE & UPLOAD, then browse to your selected piece of clipart (or picture) and hit upload - it should appear in your home page folder
- use the pull-down menu to place the graphic to the right, left, above or below your header/title
- type the EXACT graphic name in the "Banner Path/File Name"

- you can have a scrolling marque - just click the box & type in the message you want to scroll across the top of your page
- click the check box to include a current date on your web page (it updates automatically)
- click the check box to include a horizontal line that separates yoru header from the body of your web page

- Body/Footer sub-tab - this tab defines all the information for the Body/Footer Information for your web site
- You get a preview of the colours included in the clour scheme you selected
- Check the box to "Include last modified date at eh bottom of page"
- Check the box to include a counter at teh bottom of page
- there is imformation regarding a customized background (that's a different lesson)

- Subject/Meta Tags (Optional)
- most teachers will not use this - you can add a description of your web page along with key words to help a search engine             such as Google find your web page
