• State law (House Bill 1075) requires schools to screen female students for spinal problems at age 10 and 12 (or in the fall of 5th and 7th grades) and all male students at age 13 or 14 (or in the fall of 8th grade).  Lake Dallas Middle School will be conducting spinal screenings on all 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys who have not yet been screened during the months of October, November and December.

Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier.  Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. Trained screeners will check your child for problems like scoliosis.  The procedure for screening is simple. The screeners (school nurses) will look at your child’s back while he/she stands and then bends forward.

    Important Recommendations:

    ●      Students should bring shorts to school for the exam.

    ●      All students must remove their shirt for this exam.

    ●      Girls should wear a sports bra or two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on exam day.

    ●      Boys and girls will be screened separately and one at a time.

The school will send you a letter if your child does not pass the screening. This letter will tell you how to follow up with a doctor.  This screening does not replace the need for regular check-ups.

Exceptions:  Students who have been recently screened or are under the care of a physician for spinal conditions do not need to be screened again.  Please provide the nurse with a letter from your child’s physician.

If you would like to have your child screened by their physician, please complete an affidavit stating that this will be done (affidavit can be found on the LDISD health services website and is attached to this message). Please have the physician complete the spinal screening form that can also be found on the website and attached to this message and return it or the affidavit to me by October 1, 2021.  The screening by the physician must occur within 60 days of the signed affidavit.

If you do not wish to have your child screened for religious reasons, you must submit a notarized exemption form no later than October 1, 2021.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns at lwalraven@ldisd.net or 940-497-8436.
