At the March regular monthly meeting of the LDISD Board of Trustees, Shady Shores Elementary Teacher Estrella Tovar was recognized for a life saving moment.
On February 12, what started out as a normal lunch time in the cafeteria quickly changed. A student began choking while eating their lunch. Mrs. Tovar observed the student had stand up and begin motioning to his head. She ran over and immediately began giving the student the Heimlich maneuver. She was able to dislodge the food and the student was able to take a breath. What was noted by all was Mrs. Tovar remained calm and composed during the entire situation. We are extremely thankful of Mrs. Tovar's rapid response!
