Health Screenings

The following state-mandated screenings will be conducted.  Any problems that are identified will be reported to a parent/guardian.

Vision Screenings: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 7th grade, and any student new to Texas schools

Hearing Screenings: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 7th grade, and any student new to Texas schools

Spinal Screenings:

  • Girls will be screened two times, once during the fall semester of grade 5 and again during the fall semester of grade 7.
  • Boys will be screened one time, during the fall semester of grade 8

Notification of this screening will be sent home in advance.  If you prefer to have your student screened by your physician, or wish to request an exemption, please contact your school nurse.

Acanthosis Nigricans: 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, and 7th grade will be screened for acanthosis nigricans (AN).  AN is a skin marker that may signal high levels of insulin in the body. This screening is done by looking at the skin on the back of the neck. If the screening is positive, it will be followed by checking height, weight, and blood pressure. You can get more information on the web site or contact your school nurse.

Students may also have vision or hearing screened at the request of their teacher or the Special Education department. Parents may request screening at any time.  Please contact your school nurse.
