Middle school student-athletes set six track and field team records

Lake Dallas Middle School’s track and field team didn’t allow a shortened season to stop their progress, as its student-athletes set six school records despite only competing in three meets.

Because of winter storm Uri and COVID-19, the school’s seventh- and eighth-grade track and field teams competed in fewer meets than normal. The girls’ team still ended the season with two new school records, both at the seventh-grade level, and the boys’ team set four records, three at the eighth-grade level and one in seventh grade.

"With such a drastically short middle school track season, we couldn’t be more proud of our student-athletes’ work ethic and desire to be competitive,” said Coach Janay Davis, who leads the girls track team. “In each of the meets, our eighth grade placed second as a team and our seventh grade finished in first as a team.”

Tamra Jonson broke the school’s seventh-grade triple jump record with a leap of 30 feet, 8.5 inches. Fellow seventh-grader Elena Reyna also set a grade-level record in the high jump, leaping 4 feet, 8 inches to tie the existing record.

For the boys’ team, the sole seventh-grade record earned this year was set by Chris Garcia, who ran the 400-meter dash in 56.69. His mark broke the previous record set 18 years ago. The eighth-grade team broke two relay records, earning a new 4x100-meter relay record of 46.70 seconds and a new 4x200-meter relay record of 1 minute, 37.38 seconds (relay members seen below). The eighth-grade team also earned a new individual record, with Jett Love setting a 300-meter hurdles mark of 44.82.
