Athletes of Hope Brings Chi to LD
Lake Dallas High soccer players were a little star struck last week when they got the opportunity to meet and play with Chioma “Chi” Ubogagu at Lake Dallas Elementary school. International Soccer star Ubogagu visited the school on October 3, as part of the Athletes for Hope program that partners athletes with schools for education, encouragement and inspiration.
“We had such a great visit with Chi!” Mrs. Jamie Roach, LDE PE Teacher said. “She spoke with our students about fitness and health, and told us her story. She was very humble and down to earth. She played with our students, including the high school girls’ soccer team - they understood the magnitude of who they were getting to visit and play with!”
Born in London and moved to Coppell when she was three, Chi has played soccer since she was 4 years old. A winner at every level, some of her accomplishments include two state cup titles, 2009 Texas 5A state title at Coppell HS, 2010 Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, three-time All American, Stanford #3 ranked recruit in the nation, US National Team 2008-2015, National player for Arsenal, Houston Dash and now Orlando Pride. She represented the US Under-20 team and won the 2012 FIFA World Cup.
“She talked to our 4th & 5th grade students and the high school team about the importance of eating a healthy diet, exercising, drinking enough water, and the importance of rest and education,” Mrs. Roach said. “She also told her about her move from London, her soccer career and how soccer has given her the opportunity to travel and meet many people.”
Ubogagu’s career is now taking her to Australia where she will play with the Brisbane Roar in the W-League. And there are now several Lake Dallas High soccer players and elementary students that will be following her career closely and working on their own soccer skills in hopes of following in her footsteps.
