Lake Dallas High students Joe Flowers and Garrett Hyde placed 12th out of 285 and received $2,000 ($1,000 each) in scholarships at the Texas High School BASS Association State Championship Tournament last weekend.
Coach Jason Young is extremely proud of the Lake Dallas bass fishermen, who were just 5.77 pounds short of first place.
“They’ve had some really tough conditions to fish through and the fact that they’ve stayed up there and been in the top 10 in the entire state of Texas is pretty remarkable,” Coach Young said.
Despite the weather condition, both students consider the THSBA State Championship Tournament an overall success.
“I think 12th is pretty good considering the conditions we had,” Garrett said. “I wish we would have gotten top 10; first place would have been nice.”
Joe is grateful to the Lake Dallas community for the encouragement and send-off to the state tournament. He plans to continue making the district proud.
“All we can do is go practice and come back stronger next year,” he said. “Hopefully next year we can get a few more people to join the team so it’s not just me and my partner.”
Joe and Garrett are looking forward to the Elite 10 bass fishing tournament on Eagle Mountain Lake in June. Both students will be honored at the board meeting next Monday, May 20th.
