Virtual students failing classes or chronically absent returning to classes to ensure grade advancement

Lake Dallas ISD schools have begun contacting families of virtual learners who are either failing classes or chronically absent, requiring these students return to schools to ensure they can advance to the next grade level.

The majority of students receiving these letters are failing multiple classes or regularly not attending virtual classes at any point during the school day. These students are at severe risk of not advancing to the next grade level or, in the case of seniors, graduating. Students who fit one or both criteria will return to in-person learning on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Families who receive the letter and disagree with the decision may appeal in one of two ways:

  • By submitting a medical exemption that indicates either the student or an individual in his or her household has a high-risk medical condition as defined by the CDC. School nurses will accept these medical exemptions, with links to each school’s nurse in the notification letter.
  • By requesting a transition meeting with the teacher(s) for classes the student is failing or chronically absent from. These meetings can be held virtually and will occur no sooner than 3 days after requested. The family’s child may continue virtual learning until the meeting is held.

Lake Dallas ISD’s return of virtual learners who are failing or chronically absent aligns with Texas Education Agency guidance for canceling remote learning for students who are struggling in the virtual environment. The district’s commitment to the health of students and staff on campus remains a priority, and any students returning to school must follow the district’s COVID-19 health and safety procedures, including wearing face coverings.
